Transformational changes through wash services in Nawalparasi

Project Feature:

The WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) project was implemented in Nawalparasi West to address significant issues with arsenic and iron contamination in the region’s water supply. This contamination posed serious health risks to the local population. To mitigate these risks and provide clean drinking water to the community and public institutions, the project undertook a major intervention by installing high-rise deep borings with a minimum depth of 100 feet at fifteen different locations within the Pratappur Rural Municipality.

The relevance of maintaining good hygiene practices became even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emphasis was placed on the importance of hand hygiene, particularly the correct procedures for hand washing, to prevent the spread of the virus and other infectious diseases. Community outreach efforts were made to educate residents about these practices.

Additionally, WASH infrastructures in schools were both renovated and newly constructed to ensure that all students had access to basic sanitation and hygiene facilities. This included the installation of proper handwashing stations, clean and safe toilets, and the provision of clean drinking water within the school premises.

The project also targeted pregnant and lactating women with hygiene-related training sessions. These sessions aimed to raise awareness about diseases commonly transmitted through poor hygiene practices. By educating these women, the project sought to reduce the incidence of such diseases and improve overall community health.

Overall, the WASH project in Nawalparasi West made significant strides in improving water quality and hygiene standards, thereby enhancing the health and well-being of the community.
